What is general dentistry?

General dentistry covers the routine care that keeps teeth and gums healthy: exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, crowns, and treatment for toothaches and chipped teeth. A general dentist is the person you see twice a year, the one who notices a small cavity before it needs a root canal, and the one you call when something hurts.

Expert dental care for every stage of life

A sudden toothache with your morning coffee? A playful mishap that leaves your child with a chipped tooth? Bleeding gums when you brush?

Each one gets a different fix, and all three start with a call or text to (308) 382-6660.

Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Rush treat toddlers at their first visit, teens with their first filling, and grandparents who need a crown on a tooth Dr. Jacobs filled 30 years ago. One office, one phone number, every stage.

Schedule your routine cleaning and exam

Regular checkups are the key to a lifetime of healthy smiles. We recommend a cleaning and exam every six months, and we tailor each visit to your age, health history, and needs. Every visit includes:

  • A gentle, thorough cleaning
  • A comprehensive exam to catch concerns early
  • Yearly digital x-rays for a full picture of your oral health

Your first visit runs about 60 minutes. See what to bring on our New Patient Information page.

Our general dental services

Routine exams and cleanings

A six-month cleaning removes the plaque and tartar a toothbrush misses, and the exam catches cavities and gum problems while they’re still small and inexpensive to treat. See cleaning and exams.

Fillings

A tooth-colored filling repairs a cavity in one visit and blends in with the tooth around it. See dental restorations.

Crowns

A crown covers a cracked, worn, or heavily filled tooth so you can chew on it again without worrying it will break. See dental crowns.

Emergency care

We offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies, from toothaches to broken teeth. See emergency dentistry.

Kids dentistry

First visits, cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, and emergency care for children, starting around the first birthday or first tooth. See kids dentistry.

Emergency care available

We offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies. Toothache, knocked-out tooth, lost filling, broken crown: our dentists provide prompt care to relieve your discomfort.

Call or text (308) 382-6660 and we’ll do our best to accommodate you quickly.

How much does general dentistry cost in Grand Island?

The cost of a visit depends on your insurance and on what your exam finds. Most dental plans cover preventive care, which usually includes two cleanings and exams a year plus routine x-rays. Plans cover fillings and crowns at different levels.

We accept most dental insurance plans, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Careington, Cigna, Delta Dental, GEHA, Guardian, Lincoln Financial, MetLife, United Concordia, and UnitedHealthcare. CareCredit financing is available for out-of-pocket costs, and our team will outline your estimated cost before treatment begins. Call (308) 382-6660 to check your benefits.

Your first general dentistry visit, step by step

1. Book and complete your forms

Request an appointment online or call or text (308) 382-6660. We’ll send a link to your new patient forms so you can finish them before you arrive.

2. Cleaning, imaging, and exam

Set aside 60 minutes. A gentle cleaning, an oral cancer screening, and imaging as needed come first, then Dr. Jacobs or Dr. Rush examines your teeth and gums.

3. Your plan

If everything looks healthy, we’ll see you in six months. If something needs attention, you’ll know the cost before you schedule it.

Regular cleaning vs. deep cleaning

Regular cleaning

For healthy gums. The hygienist removes plaque and tartar above the gumline and polishes your teeth. Most insurance plans cover it twice a year.

Deep cleaning

For gums that bleed, pull away from the teeth, or show bone loss on x-rays. Scaling and root planing clean below the gumline, usually with numbing and over 1 to 2 visits. Your exam will tell us which one you need.

General dentistry FAQs

How often should I schedule a dental cleaning and exam?

Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning and exam every six months, with digital x-rays yearly for a full picture of your oral health. We tailor every visit to your age, health history, and needs. Schedule your visit online or call or text (308) 382-6660.

Do you offer same-day dental appointments in Grand Island?

Yes. We offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies. Call or text (308) 382-6660 and we’ll do our best to accommodate you quickly.

What insurance do you accept for general dentistry?

We accept most dental insurance plans (see the full carrier list on our New Patients page) and offer CareCredit financing.

When should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends a first visit by age one or when the first tooth appears. We keep early visits short and gentle, and you can ask to schedule your child’s appointment close to your own cleaning. See kids dentistry.

How long does a cleaning and exam take?

Plan on about 60 minutes for a first visit, which includes a cleaning, an oral cancer screening, imaging as needed, and a comprehensive exam.

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

A routine cleaning shouldn’t hurt. If your gums are tender or you have sensitive teeth, tell the hygienist and we’ll adjust. For deep cleanings we use numbing, and oral sedation is an option for longer appointments.

What's the difference between a filling and a crown?

A filling repairs a small to medium cavity and keeps most of the tooth. A crown covers the whole tooth when a crack, a large old filling, or a root canal has left it too weak for a filling. Your exam and x-rays determine which one you need.

Do you treat gum disease?

Yes. Gum disease is one of the problems we treat, and bleeding gums usually signal it first. Early cases respond to a deep cleaning and more frequent checkups, and we refer advanced cases to a trusted specialist.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?

Start with a 60-minute cleaning and exam. We’ll show you what we find, explain your options, and give you an estimate without judgment.

Due for a cleaning?

Six months goes by fast. Call or text (308) 382-6660 or request your appointment online, and we’ll find a time Monday through Thursday from 8am to 5pm or Friday from 8am to 12pm.
